Virginia health officials have shut down oyster and clam harvesting in part of the Little Wicomico River in Northumberland County after shellfish from the area were epidemiologically linked to a Salmonella outbreak in Pennsylvania. The emergency closure took effect Oct. 9 and runs through Nov. 7.
The Pennsylvania outbreak has sickened at least five people, the Virginia Department of Health told Food Safety News. The closure came eight days into Virginia's public oyster season, which opened Oct. 1, as raw bars and seafood counters across the Mid-Atlantic stock fall shellfish.
