Virgil van Dijk makes 'nervous' plea to Liverpool fans before Man United clash

Virgil van Dijk has called on everyone at Anfield to play their part on Sunday when Liverpool welcome Manchester United.

The Reds are currently on a four-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, having taken 10 points from the last 12 on offer to close the gap on the top four to six points with a game in hand on Tottenham, who occupy the final spot.

After Wednesday's 2-0 win over Wolves, Jurgen Klopp has the perfect chance to turn a good week into a great one when Erik ten Hag's in-form Red Devils travel to Merseyside.

Van Dijk says he is fully aware of the magnitude of the fixture and accepts what is historically the most-watched fixture in world football will be hyped up all weekend prior to kick off at Anfield.

And the Netherlands captain believes everyone involved on Sunday can impact the result as Liverpool look to take a big stride towards their goal of a top-four finish.

“Yes [it's a massive game], so let's make sure everyone is at their best, including us but also the fans as they play a massive part too," Van Dijk said. "But we should be confident, we should be aggressive and I'm looking forward to it because you want to be out there performing and showing what you can do. Let's give it a go.

“It is a bit of a game on its own. It's probably getting all the hype that comes with it and we are the ones who obviously are not in good form and they are absolutely in form.

"But we know what we are capable of and we have to be at our best: players, the fans and the whole build-up towards it. Everyone has to feel responsible for getting a good result. It is not easy, it's not easy for fans as well, and sometimes you can get a little bit nervous but we need everyone to be behind us no matter what.

“We could have beat them there but obviously we lost and that's the reality. We will give it everything and hopefully it will be a good game on our side and we keep marching on towards that Champions League spot.”
