Virgil Van Dijk labelled 'horrible' after what he did against Chelsea in Carabao Cup final

Ian Wright has jokingly labelled Virgil Van Dijk as "horrible" following the Liverpool defender's penalty against Chelsea in the final of the Carabao Cup.

The dramatic Wembley showdown finished 0-0 after extra time despite multiple goals being disallowed for offside, leaving a shootout to decide the destination of the trophy.

Before the first kick, however, Thomas Tuchel brought Kepa Arrizabalaga on in place of Edouard Mendy, with the Spaniard proving the hero in two previous shootouts in the tournament.

Things did not go to plan, however, and Kepa ultimately skied the decisive penalty, handing Liverpool an 11-10 victory.

After the game, Tuchel was quick to jump to the defence of the Spaniard.

"If you want to blame somebody, blame me; this is not a problem," he said.

"I take the decisions and I don't take them to try to be the hero. Today it took 11 penalties to find the winner. And if you want to blame anyone blame me, there's no problem."

There were plenty of exceptional spot-kicks taken before the only missed one, however.

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho left Kepa red-faced with a brilliantly executed Panenka while Reece James kept his nerve off the bench on his return to score as well.

But the one that got Wright talking on his Wrighty's House podcast was Van Dijk's. As the Dutchman prepared to take his penalty Kepa appeared to be tempting him to shoot to his left.

The defender was not intimidated, however, and lashed a wicked penalty exactly where Kepa had told him to, impressing Wright in the process.

Wright said: "To see Arrizabalaga standing in the corner and Virgil still put it in that corner and then it’s the way that Virgil looked at him afterwards. Like 'what the...?'

"It was that kind of look, and he gave him such a look of disdain, it was horrible. Virgil's horrible!"
