Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he encouraged Joe Gomez to sign a new contract with Liverpool before the defender committed his future to the club.
Gomez put pen to paper on a new five-year contract earlier this month. The 25-year-old has slipped down the pecking order in Jurgen Klopp’s squad and there was plenty of speculation he could be set for a transfer away from Merseyside this summer, with Aston Villa among the clubs interested.
Klopp tended to rotate Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip alongside Van Dijk in the heart of his defence last season. Gomez made 21 appearances across all competitions in the 2021/22 campaign, with regular minutes hard to come by following his return from injury.
