The Trump-Vance transition team revealed on Wednesday that several Cabinet picks and administration appointees of President-elect Donald Trump were subjected to violent threats to their lives and safety. The threats, which occurred on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, included bomb threats and 'swatting,' a criminal hoax aimed at triggering a police response to a false crime report.
Law enforcement and authorities swiftly responded to ensure the safety of the targeted individuals. The FBI acknowledged the threats and stated that they are working with law enforcement partners to address the situation. Notably, none of the targeted individuals were under the protection of the US Secret Service.
Swatting incidents have become increasingly common in the current politically charged climate, with individuals across various ideologies being targeted. Special counsel Jack Smith and Judge Tanya Chutkan are among those who have previously faced similar threats.
One of the targets, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is also Trump's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations, was informed of a bomb threat to her residence while traveling with her family. Law enforcement agencies responded promptly to ensure their safety.
The transition team declined to provide further details, and inquiries have been made to the US Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security for additional comments on the matter.
