A prison officer has been criticised for failing to realise a violent murderer was dead when he checked on him in his cell.
Gareth Brear was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years and five months after pleading guilty to murdering "gentle" student Joe Cook, 20, in Newcastle in August 2009.
The drugged-up heroin addict snuck into the student's house in Leeds and viciously stabbed him 15 times, looking for stuff to steal to feed his habit.
