A violent feud involving guns is behind a move to increase police stop and search powers in a north Manchester district.
Officers introduced the so-called Section 60 powers in Harpurhey after a spate of 'serious violence'. The measure came into force yesterday evening and remains in place across the area until 10pm tonight (Monday).
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said the powers have been implemented to assist officers in 'preventing serious violence following several violent crimes in the Harpurhey area recently'.

No further details have been revealed about what crimes have occurred or where and when. However, the Manchester Evening News understands that the incidents involved firearms being used amid an ongoing feud.
Police have published a map showing the area targeted by the new powers. The zoned area highlighted by police includes Harpurhey shopping centre, the Asda store and McDonald's. It stretches out through Moston Vale to Greater Manchester Police headquarters.
Police patrols have been stepped up as a result. The temporary powers will allow officers to stop and search people in the areas shown in the map.
In a statement, GMP said: "The Section 60 has been implemented to assist GMP officers in preventing serious violence following several violent crimes in the Harpurhey area recently.
"These temporary, additional powers will allow officers to stop and search people in the areas shown in the attached map, for the next 24 hours.
"Roads included within this Section 60 perimeter are Rochdale Road, Parkmount Road, Lewis Avenue, Clough Road, Ashley Lane, Waverly Road, Church Lane, Lightbrowne Road, Northampton Road, Monsall Road, Carisbrook Street, Lathbury Road and Rochdale Road."
Detective Inspector Michael Russell, of GMP’s City of Manchester district, said: "We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to local residents; however, we use these powers only when proportionate and necessary.
"By enforcing the Section 60 in the area, we will work to minimise any violent behaviour in the area and prevent any further violence going forward. Our main priority is to keep the public safe. We have increased the number of officers on patrol around the local area to help provide reassurance in the area.

Harpurhey councillor Pat Karney said he supported the action taken by GMP.
"We won’t stand for any guns on the streets of Harpurhey," he added. "I will be requesting a meeting with north Manchester police to get more details about this operation and whether it’s been successful."
GMP has been approached for more information about the recent spate of violent incidents.
