ATLANTA — Georgia’s most prominent political leaders condemned the violent protest that roiled downtown Atlanta after the shooting death of an activist who authorities say was killed after the 26-year-old opened fire at a state trooper.
But the sense of political unity could be tested as the backlash over a new public safety training center planned for metro Atlanta sharpens attention on debate over the city’s struggles with high crime rate and new crackdowns pushed by Gov. Brian Kemp and his GOP allies.
Backed by a sweeping reelection victory, the governor has proposed new measures to target gang violence and limit no-cash bail. Kemp, too, has not shied away from labeling the activists as terrorists — and demanding they be brought to swift justice.
