Violence erupted in Amsterdam on Monday evening following a soccer match between Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv and local team Ajax last Thursday. The clashes led to several arrests by riot police.
A police spokesman reported that a tram at the ’40-‘45 Square in the western part of Amsterdam caught fire, likely due to fireworks being thrown at it, resulting in shattered windows. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the tram was empty at the time of the incident.
Local TV footage showed individuals on the square hurling fireworks, poles, and wooden pallets, prompting police to advise the public to avoid the area. Riot squads were deployed to restore peace and maintain order.
This recent wave of violence follows days of unrest in the Dutch capital, with Israeli soccer fans being targeted in what authorities and international leaders have condemned as acts of antisemitism. Prior to the match, Maccabi fans were involved in an incident where they attacked a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag in Amsterdam. Additionally, videos verified by Reuters captured Maccabi supporters chanting anti-Arab slogans on the day of the game.
The ongoing tensions highlight the need for authorities to address and prevent further outbreaks of violence, emphasizing the importance of promoting tolerance and respect among sports fans and the wider community.
