Vincent Kompany sends Daniel Levy clear message as Burnley boss becomes 'top Tottenham target'

Vincent Kompany has insisted that he's focused on his job at Burnley despite having been lined up to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham. The former Manchester City defender has been heavily linked with taking the helm at Hotspur Way after the Italian parted ways with the north London outfit earlier this week.

Initially, Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino seemed to be the two frontrunners for the Spurs job but a report has since revealed that Kompany is in fact the 'leading contender'. However, in an interview with Sky Sports, the Belgian has outlined that he's happy at Turf Moor and is eager to build upon the success Burnley have enjoyed this term.

The Clarets are currently top of the Championship with a 13 point lead over second-placed Sheffield United. However, Kompany hasn't just transformed Burnley's fortunes, he's also managed to reshape the club's identity on the pitch into a side who play attractive football.

"The way I am as a person, my starting point is: 'Okay, where can this place go?' You know, because everybody is talking about our limits, but we are the only ones who can judge our own limits I think," the 36-year-old said.

"So, my first thing is where this place can go and that consumes my every moment. So, as much as I love the club - I want to show an example - when we left Manchester City, I love the club.

"But, my first thought is not like: 'Oh, it'd be nice to...'. My first thought is how we can close the gap. I think that is my job as a manager.

"Is there something impossible that's being done over there? Or is it something possible for us? That's my job. That's what I do and that's the only thing that bothers me. And the rest? I don't know.

"I think, in football, when you find a good place - it's worth really protecting that," added Kompany before explaining the importance of seeing out his project in Lancashire.

"It's really difficult to maintain consistency across the season, but, for us, it's been really important to set our targets," he said. We are thinking more about a cycle. We've got a three or four-year period together. Can we continue that and keep improving the club? That's the aim."
