Vincent Kompany praises Limerick teen Dara Costelloe after breaking into Burnley team

Dara Costelloe will be part of the first team fold at Burnley this season having impressed boss Vincent Kompany.

The teenager has been thrust into action for the Clarets in the opening two games of the Championship campaign, starting each of them wide on the right.

He could have marked his debut at Huddersfield with a goal having missed a couple of presentable chances and he retained his spot in the side for the weekend draw with Luton.

With Jay Rodriguez and Scott Twine injured Vincent Kompany is short on attacking options, although the recent arrivals of Manuel Benson and Vitinho raise selection questions ahead of the trip to Watford on Friday.

And while Costelloe's place may come under threat, the 19-year-old has caught the eye of the coaching staff in pre-season and seems set to remain in the first team picture this term.

Kompany has spoken of ensuring he has two players competing per position as he seeks to mould the squad to his taste and Costelloe, who has worked hard to improve his physicality over the past few months, is firmly in that reckoning.

"He is," said the Clarets boss, when asked whether he was now considered a first team player by Lancs Live. "He has taken his chance. With a young player I am very cautious. Everyone can see what his game is, he drives at people and he runs in behind.

"Defensively, I think he defends like one of our defensive midfielders at times. He is on every ball. And he adds a little bit of pace to the frontline. So that side of things I can see just as much as everyone else can see.

"Then you start looking at how is the attitude, the work-rate, the behaviour after his first game and all these types of habits that are so important to a career and with him I feel confident.

"He works as if he has achieved nothing, he is 100 per cent coachable and even when he doesn't play well he gives you everything and that is the baseline.

"It is an example for every other young player and I wouldn't want it any different. You can back these type of young players."
