The Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of a change to their roster, and last week it was reported that edge rusher Za’Darius Smith had asked for his release from the team. While the Vikings have not granted his request, it does bring to light the lack of depth at that position.
Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News helped the Vikings add to that depth when he released his mock draft on Sunday and had the Vikings selecting Iowa edge rusher Lukas Van Ness.
Van Ness impressed by running well for his size at the Combine as a good later first-round value that offers that massive frame of Wilson. His versatility in the front seven is a perfect fit for new defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
Van Ness is a physical specialist who has incredible potential. His combination of speed and strength is where he really flourishes. Should the Vikings draft him in round one, they’d be getting a guy who could make an impact early in his career, and if he lives up to his potential, he’d be a perfect building block for this Vikings’ defensive rebuild.
