MasterChef viewers 'robbed' as 'wrong' contestant gets sent home

Viewers have been left reeling after the MasterChef quarter final, saying the wrong contestant was sent home. In the most recent episode, which aired on Friday, April 14, the contestants were tasked with making a delicious two-course dinner in just one hour and 15 minutes. And as well as serving judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace, the contestants also had to serve their dishes to last year's finalists Radha and Pookie and reigning champion, Eddie.

Whilst the judges felt there was one chef who was a cut above the rest - Terri - they found pros and cons with the dishes of the other three contestants, Nicholas, Vanessa and Matthew - and ultimately decided to send Matthew home.

"A bit gutted, not going to lie," Matthew said after he was sent home. "But it's been an amazing experience from the very first day to the last, I'll never forget it for years to come."

Although Matthew was praised by the judges for his "elegant presentation" earlier in the competition - and judges had loved his previous delicious Caribbean dishes - on Friday's episode he didn't quite offer what the judges were looking for.

Matthew told the cameras that he'd decided to cook a chicken ballotine stuffed with truffle mushrooms for his main meal and a sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream and rum toffee sauce for his dessert this week as he wanted to show "versatility" and that he can cook 'more than just Caribbean dishes'. But unfortunately, his meals weren't to all the judges' tastes.

"I would love a bit more filling," said last year's champion Eddie, critiquing Matthew's dinner. "[It needs] a bit more of that mushroom flavour and the sauce is quite overpoweringly sweet."

"It's not perfect," added Gregg Wallace. "But I am really impressed that Matthew has managed to get this served up."

Later, Matthew began to run behind on time as he took a little longer to make his dessert than he had anticipated - and whilst last year's finalist Radha thought Matthew was "brave" in serving a sticky toffee pudding in an unusual way, the other judges thought it was strange that Matthew had decided to serve it in little chunks, rather than as one good-sized dessert.

At the end of the programme, Gregg and John confirmed Matthew would be leaving the competition - and viewers at home were shocked.

"What!! Mathew who has made some of the best dishes so far goes home! I demand a recount! The boy was robbed!" said one viewer. "F***ing robbed," agreed another.

"Not Matthew! In the previous rounds I would have devoured his food!" said another viewer. "Matthew???? Are you mad!!!!! He’s been the best so far," another viewer agreed.

"The judges are jerks. Matthew was solid," another Masterchef fan said. "What!!!! How on earth did they decide Matthew should go!" another added.
