The Day That Belongs to Saraswati
Vijayadashami falls on the tenth day after Navaratri ends, the morning when the goddess is believed to have completed her battle and returned to stillness. In the tradition of Vidyarambham, this stillness is not rest, it is readiness. Saraswati, who presides over speech, letters, and all forms of knowing, is understood to be most fully present on this day. The Devi Bhagavata Purana describes Navaratri as the period of the goddess's concentrated power, and the tenth day as its culmination and release into the world. Writing a child's first letter on any other morning is writing it into ordinary time. Writing it on Vijayadashami is writing it into the moment the goddess turns toward the world.
