Video shows someone fleeing scene where New Jersey council member was killed

Surveillance cameras near the townhouse of a slain New Jersey councilwoman captured a mysterious figure racing away from the scene of her murder.

The clip, obtained by News 12 New Jersey, was recorded on Feb. 1 just after 7 p.m. — around the time authorities think Eunice Dwumfour was killed. She was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside her white Nissan SUV after it crashed near the Camelot at La Mer apartment complex in Sayreville, police said.

The new video seems to match statements from witnesses on the scene, who claimed they spotted a person fleeing toward the Garden State Parkway.

Authorities previously said they believed Dwumfour was the intended target of a planned attack, but have provided few other updates since her slaying. A motive remained unclear and no suspects have been named in the case as of Wednesday.

Dwumfour, a Republican, was elected to the Sayreville Borough Council for a three-year term in 2021, ousting the incumbent Democrat in a shocking election. She also was a certified business analyst as well as a part-time EMT and served as the Director of Churches for the Nigerian-based Champions Royal Assembly.

Police have asked residents for surveillance camera video taken at the Camelot at La Mer complex between the hours of 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 1. They’ve also called on anyone with knowledge about the slaying to come forward.
