The cold open for Saturday’s UFC 274 pay-per-view is solid, and plenty sufficient to get fans hyped up for three big fights.
There’s just one problem: The lead is Charles Oliveira (32-8 MMA, 20-8 UFC) and his lightweight title defense – which no longer is a title defense after he was stripped of the belt for missing weight Friday. Now only challenger Justin Gaethje (23-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) can win the belt.
With little time to redo the opening video package, it’s presumed the UFC will push this one out as scheduled.
But at least the narrative for women’s strawweight champ Rose Namajunas (11-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) and former champ Carla Esparza (18-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC) stays the same for the cold open, as does the one for the lightweight clash between Michael Chandler (22-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) and Tony Ferguson (25-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC).
