Victoria Beckham has opened up on what its like being a mother to four children, and compares it to 'crowd control'.
The former pop star welcomed her first child with football legend David Beckham in 1999, three months before the pair tied the knot in a lavish event. The couple have four children together - Brooklyn, 23, Romeo, 20, Cruz, 17, and Harper, 11 - and the Spice Girls star admits she's lucky to have raised both boys and girls.
"I feel blessed to have experienced both: being a mother to boys and also a girl. But also, four is a lot of kids," she told Dax Shepard on his podcast, Armchair Expert. "It’s less about parenting and more about crowd control."
She added: ”Can you imagine all the [soccer] boots and [soccer] socks, and smelly [soccer] shirts — and that’s just David! It was a lot, but they’re all amazing. And the boys are so good with their little sister. They really are, so it’s lovely to see."
The Spice Girl turned fashion designer had her relationship and work life collide as she discovered she was pregnant with Brooklyn while the band were touring in America. "I found out I was pregnant when I was on tour, and the first show in America was August in Miami in an amphitheatre," she remembers.
"Honestly, I was in a catsuit that was expanding by the day. I had a wig on to try and get the humidity under control. And I had a bucket on the side of the stage that I was throwing up in constantly because I had such bad morning sickness with Brooklyn."
She added on the podcast: ”Morning sickness doesn’t mean you’re only sick in the morning, let me tell you!"
After Brooklyn, Victoria and David welcomed Romeo in 2002 and his big brother was the first person to hear that his mum was expecting. At the time, Victoria said “Brooklyn was the first person I broke the news to after my doctor confirmed I was pregnant. Then I sent him over to David to tell him the secret.
“I was in tears as he toddled over to his daddy and said ‘Mummy is going to have a baby’. I hoped it would make him feel he is involved with the new baby.”
The couple then welcomed Cruz in 2005 in Spain. David and Victoria had moved to Spain in 2003 due to David’s transfer from Man U to Real Madrid.
In 2011, Posh and Becks welcomed their fourth child and only daughter Harper Seven. The former England captain confirmed the reasoning behind Harper’s name: "Victoria's favourite book is To Kill A Mockingbird, it's a very strong, passionate book and the author was Harper Lee, and that is where Harper came from."
While most people believe the ‘Seven’ part in Harper’s name is linked to his historical time at Man U where he sported the number 7 on his shirt, David said this was only part of the reason.
He added: "The main reason behind Seven was it symbolises spiritual perfection – the seven wonders of the world, the seven colours of the rainbow – and in many cultures, it is a lucky number."
