On Tuesday night, San Antonio won the top pick in the 2023 NBA draft when the draft lottery results were revealed. Upon winning the No. 1 overall draft slot, the Spurs are expected to draft French phenom Victor Wembanyama.
San Antonio, which finished with a dismal 22-60 record last season, now immediately has high expectations to return as a Western Conference power in the near future.
The 7-foot-4 prodigy, regarded as one of the greatest basketball prospects ever, is garnering a level of hype that basketball fans haven’t witnessed since LeBron James entered the league back in 2003.
While watching the lottery with family and friends in France, Wembanyama was overcome with emotion knowing that he likely will have the opportunity to commence his NBA career under Gregg Popovich—a head coach who has won five NBA championships.

“I can’t really describe it. My heart’s beating,” Wembanyama told ESPN. “I’ve got everyone I love around me. It’s a really special moment that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”
Wembanyama believes he will make a smooth transition to the NBA and aims to win a championship sooner rather than later.
“I’m a team player. I’m going to make everything to win as many games as I can. I’m trying to win a ring ASAP—so be ready,” Wembanyama added.
