A teenage boy stabbed to death at a train station in Melbourne's west has been identified as 16-year-old Pasawm Lyhym.
Confirmation of his identity came as a 17-year-old Caroline Springs boy was taken into police custody in relation to the fatal stabbing.
Officers arrived at the scene at Station Place in Sunshine on Thursday afternoon to find the 16-year-old victim from Melton South with injuries.
He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Homicide Squad detectives investigating the circumstances of the teenager's death announced two other teenagers had been identified as suspects involved in the attack.
"We encourage those two males to contact the local police and arrange themselves to be presented at a police station to give themselves up," Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said.
Superintendent Stevenson said the incident involved two groups from two different schools.
"They are school children around the 15 or 16-year-old mark and they know each other," she said.
"They've met down near the Sunshine bus station and that's where an altercation has taken place."
Police believe three people were armed with knives during Thursday's incident.
While the motive for the attack remained unclear, Superintendent Stevenson said the two suspects were part of a group that "appear to be the aggressors".
"The aggressive group of boys attended there and they looked as though they were there for a purpose," she said.
Superintendent Stevenson said at one stage the group ran at the victim and chased him for "a certain point".
Boy remembered as 'kind, joyful' person
Pasawm's death has left members of the Myanmar community reeling.
A steady stream of friends and loved ones have laid floral tributes at the scene.
His brother, Mawn Lyhym, described the 16-year-old as a good and kind person.
He said they were planning to go to the movies together last night.
"He's young, he's nice, he's a kind person … I don't think nobody deserved none of this," he said.
Friend Kaelin Aguila remembered him as a joyful person.
"He was a fun, happy guy. He would joke around a lot in class, always get in trouble," he said.
"He was just joyful all the time."
Another 16-year-old boy from Sunshine North was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
"Investigators are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the investigation is ongoing," police said.
Police concerned about retaliation
Police have been patrolling schools in the areas as well as the scene to minimise the chance of any retaliatory violence.
"We'll do everything in our power to stop that from happening," she said.
"There's nothing to indicate at this stage that that is going to happen but there's certainly a concern that it's going to happen."
Police will continue their search for the weapons involved in the incident.
Superintendent Stevenson said while knife violence was always a concern, police data showed it had been decreasing in Victoria.
"Knife homicides have been decreasing over the past couple of years," she said.
"There was a 40 per cent decrease in the number of knife-related homicides in Victoria last year."
Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or had information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
