Vicky Pattison has been flooded with praise after being left close to tears on The One Show. The former Geordie Shore star appeared on the BBC One show on Monday night (July 18) to discuss her upcoming documentary which is very close to home.
She has recently opened up about her binge drinking past ahead of her new Channel 4 documentary, Vicky Pattison: My Dad, Alcohol and Me. She recalled being used "as a human walking stick" by her dad John as his drinking became worse and admitting to becoming "frightened" at the idea of his alcoholism being passed on to her.
The documentary will see Vicky, who shot to fame as one of the popular party girls on MTV's Geordie Shore, alongside her dad as well as finding out if her own lifestyle has done irreparable damage to her body and learn how our genes and behaviour can lead to a susceptibility to addictive behaviour.
Host Alex Jones, who has opened up about her own experience similar to Vicky's in her new book, asked how hard it was to revisit the things she's felt in the past now that she's in a good place with plans to marry her fiance Ercan Ramadan.
"I just don't think it's ever easy to have serious and open conversations that ar potentially going to be difficult with people you love," the 34-year-old replied. "I don't know how you feel but I hate confrontation with people I love and having to give my dad tough love in the documentary was really difficult.
"My instant reaction is to wrap him up in cotton wool. He's had a hard enough life as it is and he doesn't need me giving him a hard time about it." She shared how they went through mediation in the documentary and she realised that sometimes "tough love is the only way".
Vicky also said that she didn't have to persuade her dad to take part in the documentary, saying they both 'want people to understand' alcoholism a bit more. "And I think she comes across really well," she said with a smile.
But soon after, Vicky become unable to speak as she fought tears. After Ronan Keating asked what she has learnt about herself, the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here winner said she is almost the age her dad was when he started to 'lost his battle' with his addiction.
"And that's terrifying," Vicky said. "I'm very aware my turbulent relationship with alcohol has got us into trouble in the past and been a concern but I couldn't get it out of my head that this was the year it was all going to unravel. I felt it was this predetermined conclusion."
She said that doing the documentary had made her realise she has what her dad didn't at that time, and that was is the "huge desire not the be that way". She chocked back tears as she said: "I do want a life filled with different things," before apologising for getting emotional.
Fellow guest Carol Kirkwood put a supportive arm around the TV star as Alex and Ronan used the time to wrap up Vick's interview. And The One Show viewers were soon commenting on social media in support of Vicky.
