Vicky Pattison claims housemates were 'guinea pigs' on reality TV hit Geordie Shore

Vicky Pattison has said that the Geordie Shore housemates were "guinea pigs" when the hit MTV show first started out in 2011.

The 35-year-old has previously explained how the show brought out the "very worst qualities" in her, and that she has "no desire to relive any of it" snubbing the opportunity to take part in the reunion series last year.

And on BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live show this morning with hosts Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles, the Newcastle-born celebrity revealed more about her experiences on the show.

Turning his attention to the North East-based TV hit, from which Vicky found her fame, Richard said: "I think that most people came to know about you when you were on Geordie Shore, and I think a lot of people expressed surprise that you turned out to be someone who's very thoughtful, who's got ideas about the world and who has done very interesting things.

"Did you expect that?"

Vicky replied: "So obviously none of us knew what to expect at all from Geordie Shore - we were a sort of guinea pig within that space you know? That particular brand of reality TV. So no, we were all surprised with any sort of longevity that we've managed to garner.

"But I will say I am highly sensitive in general, like kind of just a total girl, a complete girl.

"And I'm really aware that I don't think...there is a sort of sweeping generalisation that surrounds people that have come from reality TV, that we're in some way vapid or superficial or unintelligent, and certainly don't deserve the platform we've been given.

"Some people, they just allow it to wash over them you know? Grateful and happy that they're living a life that they love - what do they care what other people think? But I've always cared what other people think, probably to my detriment you know.

"So I've spent the last ten years of my life pretty much since I left Geordie Shore, trying to make people forget the person that I was when I was there and do something that made me feel really proud of myself."

Vicky then went on to reflect about the premise of the show, adding that: "Geordie Shore - for anybody who's not familiar - is kind of eight young people all living in a house together, kissing people they shouldn't, drinking too much, fighting, falling out and they follow us 24 hours a day, you know?

"So it's everything that people in their late-teens/early-twenties would probably be doing - throw in a little bit of sensationalism of course as well, and yeah, that was my life for about four years."

Vicky then detailed how the general public didn't get a chance to see her true self, as hundreds of hours worth of footage were cut down into a 42 minute episode. She continued: "So there is like a hundred hours of footage, created 42 minutes of show.

"So for 99 hours and 18 minutes - I'm no Carol Vorderman, I apologise...but yeah about that - I could have been like sitting around drinking a green tea and being compassionate, being kind, reading a book on like Russian literature, whatever I could have been doing anything, but it's not exactly reality TV worthy is it? It's not show-worthy.

"So the edit you got, the snippets you seen of me - I was probably storming round, swearing, shouting and chucking drinks you know? It's what people wanted to see."

She added: "But then when people don't see the other stuff - when people don't see the 'she's actually got a nice turn of phrase her' or 'aw she's actually quite kind' or 'she's actually quite compassionate' or a 'team player' - when people don't see that, they reduce you to a caricature, a stereotype.

"And that is what people assumed I was - this walking, giant, angry Geordie, which of course nobody is all the time."
