Vice President Kamala Harris will represent the U.S. at the global peace summit on the war in Ukraine, organized by Switzerland and promoted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The summit is set to take place in Lucerne on June 15. President Joe Biden will be absent as he is scheduled to attend a campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles hosted by actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts.
The White House stated that Vice President Harris will emphasize the Biden-Harris Administration's dedication to supporting Ukraine's pursuit of a just and enduring peace, grounded in Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the principles of the U.N. charter. Harris will also express continued backing for the people of Ukraine as they resist ongoing Russian aggression. The U.S. delegation will include Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan.
President Zelenskyy has been actively promoting the summit and urging world leaders to participate, despite accusing Russia, with assistance from China, of attempting to undermine the meeting.
