Sky Sports has lost the rights to show live Scotland matches after Nordic streaming service Viaplay acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast all of men's team's matches from 2024.
The move means fans will need to fork out more hard-earned cash - with Viaplay becoming the FOURTH subscription broadcaster to show Scottish teams in action along with Sky, Premier Sports and BT Sport.
However, the Scottish Football Association has stressed they are in discussions to make some matches free to air.
The deal has been made through UEFA’s centralised National Association media rights sales process, under which UEFA takes sole responsibility for the marketing and sales of broadcast rights for all 55 European nations’ matches.
And the Viaplay link-up will be in force for at least four years, covering Scotland’s European Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and UEFA EURO 2028, as well as the side’s UEFA Nations League campaigns in 2024/25 and 2026/27, and any international friendlies up to 2028.
Scottish FA Chief Executive Ian Maxwell: “We are pleased that Viaplay recognise the value of the Scotland Men’s National Team and look forward to them broadcasting what will hopefully be yet more successful qualification campaigns for this current Scotland side.
“The guaranteed income that we receive through UEFA’s centralised media rights sales allows us to continue to grow the national game.
“The finances help us to invest in a multitude of areas, including the grassroots game, girls’ and women’s football, coach education and para-football, helping us harness the power of football to grow and develop the game.”
Viaplay is set to launch later in the year, with further details and pricing announced in due course. A Viaplay monthly subscription in the US currently costs $4.99 per month, which translates to around £4 a month in the UK at current exchange rates.
