Millions of Brits love spending time with their dogs both in the house and out on a long, sunny walk. But when inside there are a number of potentially toxic foods that could poison man's best friend.
The Upper Canada Animal Hospital has outlined a list of these products in a Tiktok video, reports The Mirror. The clip, which has gained more than 75 million views, has gone viral as it includes some surprising products.
The items on the list have included avocados, garlic, onions and ibuprofen. The caption urged viewers: "Be sure to do research before giving your dog new foods and contact your veterinarian if they get into something they shouldn't have."
Another answer was grapes, which can have a detrimental effect on a dog’s kidneys and in some cases can lead to organ failure. Sultanas and raisins also can have the same effect.
Another, more well-known item featured in the video was chocolate, with the main ingredient, cocoa, containing the life-threatening compound theobromine. A dog’s heart rate would increase if it were to ingest theobromine.
Another vet said that "gum or anything with xylitol" in it is toxic to dogs, as it can cause blood clotting and liver failure. Pet owners commented on the video, sharing their surprise at some of the items listed.
One person wrote: "Grapes?? I give my dog grapes all the time". "I was unaware of the garlic and onions", another said.
Other dog owners took the opportunity to list other toxic items that were not included in the video. One person wrote that "any moulding food can be lethal to dogs".
Another warned that "Peanut butter can have xylitol", while another user suggested a way round this by feeding dogs "one ingredient peanut butter", to prevent any adverse effects from ingesting the spread.
The Upper Canada Animal Hospital posted a second video to their TikTok page, providing further answers, including antifreeze, yeast, marijuana, rat bait and rat poison, Vitamin D, macadamia nuts and mould.
