Vet nurse bakes cheeky cat litter cake as leaving gift - it's so realistic pals refuse to eat it

A cheeky veterinary nurse handed her colleagues a leaving cake that looked just like a used cat litter tray that was so realistic one was too repulsed to even eat it. Crissy Lister decided to give her work pals something to remember her by when she rustled up the funny leaving cake served in an actual litter tray last month (June 22nd).

The senior vet nurse, who regularly took Maine Coon cross puss Arlo into work with her as an emotional support animal, was inspired by a similar kitty-themed cake she spotted years ago. On her last day at West Mount Vets in Halifax, West Yorkshire, she was unable to take the three-year-old puss in with her so wanted to incorporate her furry friend in her farewell cake.

The 31-year-old whipped up a vanilla sponge cake topped with crumble to resemble cat litter and 'questionable' chocolate icing 'poops'. The sweet treat was served up in a brand-new litter tray complete with food scoop and a picture of Arlo with a speech bubble that reads 'Goodbyes are sh*t'.

Crissy, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said: "A couple of people were a bit sceptical about eating it. "One person wasn't a fan and didn't eat it.

"I didn't reveal it, I just left it in a room and walked off and let them discover it on their own. I got the odd glance and people going 'oh my god that's amazing'. Others were like 'please tell me that's a brand-new litter tray'.

"It was a vanilla sponge with some raspberry jam, a layer of icing and then the crumble topping. Then I did some questionable chocolate icing decorations on the top. It's a genuine litter tray but it's obviously a brand-new one."

"Everyone who tried it really loved it and went back for seconds." Having worked at the 'amazing' veterinary surgery for three-and-a-half years, Crissy said it was a hard decision to leave - but knew just the cake to make to mark the occasion.

Crissy said: "It was amazing as a place to work, it was so hard to go. I just left for a bit of a change in pace, I've moved to night nursing. We don't get many people leave very often, our branch was quite a small, close-knit family.

"I'd seen a picture a fair few years ago of [this cake] and it had always stuck with me. I thought it would be a really good leaving cake for someone but no-one had ever really left so I'd not been able to make it, so I thought 'this is the perfect opportunity'.

"Arlo used to come to work with me but I couldn't take him that day, I knew he had to be included somehow. I originally was going to make a fruit crumble but it was such a rush in the last few days of work that I just didn't have the time.

"I decided to grab my nana's recipe out of the cupboard and make a vanilla sponge. I was a bit concerned about how it might taste layering the crumble with the cake but it went together really well - it was a bit like a Bakewell tart in the end.

"The cat tray was the kind of humour I thought work would appreciate. In this field you have to have that kind of sense of humour, you can't get through it without a laugh.

"I shared it with friends and family first and they all found it hilarious. I didn't share it online at first as it was a bit of a private joke and I was worried not everyone would get the humour, but they did.

"So far online everyone's found it quite funny." It's not just Crissy's colleagues who enjoyed the cake, when she shared the creation online people flocked to the post praising her work.

Crissy's post reads: "I work in a vets, and made this for my last day. Vanilla sponge, raspberry jam, icing and crumble topping with chocolate icing 'decoration'."

One commented: "This is brilliant and I absolutely love cake but not sure I could eat it." Another wrote: "You know it looks fantastic, so realistic but I honestly would struggle to eat it. Great job." One joked: "You 100% sure it's chocolate?"
