July is expected to be the hottest on record with a heatwave set to hit the country, bringing temperatures above well above 30C. While we will all be eager to enjoy some time outdoors with our pets, a vet has issued an urgent message to owners in a bid to help them stay safe in the sun.
As reported by MEN, dogs are not always capable of regulating their time in the sun and often need a bit of encouragement to drink more water. If not, the effects can be devastating, leading to heatstroke and dehydration, which could prove fatal.
Dr Samantha Butler-Davies, Veterinary Clinical Services Manager at Vets4Pets, has revealed her best advice and top tricks to keep pets cool. She said: “Pets love to have fun in the sun, but when the temperature gets too high, it’s time chill out. Dogs, for example, don’t sweat like we do, they cool themselves down by panting. But on really hot days, panting isn’t as effective and they need some help to cool down.
