Very Irish Headlines Instagram account just ‘wants to make people laugh’ with Ireland's most mental stories

The mysterious person behind the Very Irish Headlines Instagram account just “wants to make people happy and laugh” with Ireland's most mental stories.

The page, which uploads stories that are truly Irish and relatable to the people of our country, has over 200,000 followers.

And the person who runs the account spoke to Dublin Live - on the condition that they remain anonymous.

They said they had their own collection of funny headlines from stories that could only happen in Ireland.

“I thought I was onto something so with Instagram, I just wanted a place to store them," they said.

"I thought my friends would find it funny.

“It started in February 2020, the month before the pandemic. It was unintentionally kind of perfect timing because people started spending more time on social media.

“The very first headline was about a guy who put out a fire on a woman's coat in mass, then he was hailed as a local hero. That's always been close to my heart because it’s so random.

“My parents used to buy lots of papers when I was growing up, especially on a Sunday. My dad shares funny news stories and he doesn’t even realise they’re very Irish. He’s always done it.

“I lived abroad for a couple of years too and just out of homesickness, I was checking what was happening at home, so that contributed to the idea of the page too.”

But what makes a headline uniquely Irish?

It’s something that gets us talking and - most importantly - laughing.

They said: “A lot of the headlines could happen anywhere in the world but if it says Tullamore or Ballinasloe it’s just funnier.

"You’re picturing a small town and the people going mad over a billboard that went up or a pothole or something like that, it’s like everyone can relate to it.

“You can imagine it happening in your own town, or your parents complaining about it. Irish people don’t take themselves too seriously, something random could happen and we’re all like ‘that’s a bit mad’ and move on with our days.

“A lot of us are from small towns and we know the local character, politician or people we went to school with and there’s one thing someone remembers from the news then it ends up on the headlines page.

"I love seeing people tagging their friends saying ‘Mullingar has finally featured,’ it’s great.

“I don’t post a lot of political stuff because I don't want any negative comments because they stress me out. I just want everyone to have a laugh.

"The Healy-Raes will always do well because they say crazy, typical Kerry stuff. But I don't want anyone to think I'm affiliated with any party. I just want everyone to be happy.

“If something particularly weird happens, like the lads bringing the dead uncle to the post office in Carlow. So many people sent that in, I didn't really want to post it because I thought it was so sad but it’s what the people wanted.”
