Vernon Kay leaves Radio 2 listeners cringing after unfortunate Jimmy Savile blunder

Vernon Kay has raised a few eyebrows across the country this morning after an embarrassing Jimmy Savile blunder. After stepping in and presenting Comic Relief on Friday night after South Gloucestershire comedian Joel Dommett tested positive for Covid-19, Vernon Kay is now filling in for Zoe Ball on her BBC 2 breakfast show.

Radio 2 listeners have been left cringing this morning (March 22) whilst tuning in for Vernon's stint on Zoe's show after an unfortunate slip up. Like many radio presenters do, the former I'm a Celebrity contestant took some time to read through listener's comments on social media.

Reading out the comment one Radio 2 listener had left, Vernon said: "Love Mark Almond, awesome voice and so unique. His music has helped me through some dark days.

"I saw him at Pride, and I think I was the first one at Hyde Park to run down and wait for him at the front. Amazing."

But then, Vernon embarrassingly slipped up and misread the comment. He said: "His duet with Jimmy Saville, uh, Jimmy Somerville, apologies, just blew me away. Absolutely awesome."

Realising his mistake, Vernon added: "Well that's a clip we don't want to ever hear again, apologies. Apologies."

Of course, against Vernon's word, plenty of listeners have been quick to jump on social media and Tweet his unfortunate mishap. @tomatoshrimping said: "Vernon Kay, you had one job. Don't get your Jimmy's in a twist. Please can he be a regular on Radio 2. I never realised I need Jimmy Saville level bloopers to get me up in the morning."

Archbishop Poet said: "I think Vernon Kay suggesting Marc Almond duet with Jimmy Savile has been the highlight of the morning. @BBCRadio2". Meanwhile, Gayle wrote: "Vernon Kay will never live that down."

Vernon is currently filling in for Zoe Ball, who has had to take time off work after testing postive for Covid-19. The seasoned radio presenter was also meant to appear on Comic Relief on Friday night, but after taking a lateral flow test which came back positive on Friday morning, she had to pull out.

The dad-of-two confirmed the news at the weekend on Instagram, writing: "Early start tomorrow, I'll be filling in for @zoetheball on tomorrows @bbcradio2 breakfast show and until she's all set to return free from TheCovid. Get well soon Zoe."
