Two bouts of flooding from storms in July have impacted businesses and destinations in northern Vermont, particularly in the economically depressed area of Burke. The storms, which occurred on July 10 and July 30, caused significant damage to roads, bridges, homes, and trails, affecting the local economy and discouraging visitors during the peak season.

Kingdom Trails, a renowned destination for mountain bikers attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually, suffered approximately $300,000 in damages to its trails. Despite the challenges, efforts are underway to repair the trails and restore normal operations. The community is urging visitors to continue supporting the area and enjoy the recreational opportunities it offers.

Following the storms, 341 businesses in Vermont have reported flood damage this year, with last summer affecting around 1,100 businesses. Some establishments in Lyndonville, such as the Miss Lyndonville Diner and Village Sport Shop, have decided not to reopen or to shift their focus due to the impact of the flooding.

In response to the flooding events, Vermont enacted a law requiring fossil fuel companies to contribute to the costs associated with extreme weather events linked to climate change. However, the success of this initiative depends on potential litigation against the oil industry.

Community support and federal assistance sought for recovery efforts.

The town of Burke, home to the Burke Mountain ski area, heavily relies on Kingdom Trails as a key economic driver. The closure of the trails has had a ripple effect on local businesses, with cancellations affecting accommodations, restaurants, and shops in the area.

Despite the challenges, the community has come together to support one another during this difficult time. Efforts are being made to assess the damages and seek assistance from the federal government. The resilience and unity displayed by residents and businesses in Burke reflect a true sense of community spirit.

While the recent flooding has posed challenges, the efficient response of the trail crew and the reopening of some trails have provided a glimmer of hope for the future. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to continue supporting the area and enjoying the natural beauty and recreational opportunities it has to offer.
