Vera's Kingsley Ben-Adir lands surprising new role in major Hollywood film

Former Vera actor Kingsley Ben-Adir will soon be seen on the big screen as the star of one of the year's mostly hotly anticipated films.

Before the days of Paul Kaye enjoying plenty of sharp tongued banter with DCI Stanhope as Dr Malcolm Donahue, the resident pathologist in the ITV drama was Dr Marcus Sumner, the part played by Kingsley from series 4-6, with him then reprising the role before his Vera exit in 2018.

Dr Marcus was a firm favourite with Vera fans and, since flying the nest from the show, has gone onto star in Oscar nominated movie One Night in Miami. And now he has been confirmed for an even bigger role, one that is a million miles away from Dr Marcus - a Ken doll in Barbie, the much publicised Greta Gerwig film that will be released in the summer.

Kinsley will star alongside leads Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in the movie inspired by the iconic doll, with other famous faces in the cast list including Will Ferrell, Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera and New Rules singer Dua Lipa, who will play another version of Barbie.

A role in Barbie isn't the only big part film fans will see Kingsley play in the near future, as he is also playing the lead role in a biopic of music legend Bob Marley; with him being snapped on set alongside co-stars like Happy Valley's James Norton.

News of Kingsley's Hollywood exploits come as Vera has been confirmed to return for a 13th series, but without stars Kenny Doughty and Ibinabo Jack, who have now both departed from the cast. Both will be seen for a final time as Aiden and Jac respectively, in already filmed special - The Rising Tide - which is set to air on ITV later this year.
