Vera's Brenda Blethyn bought character's famous hat from a stall in Newcastle

It's a look that has become synonymous with her famous on-screen alias and it has been revealed that Brenda Blethyn bought Vera's hat herself from a stall in Newcastle.

Fans of the much loved drama are now left wondering when they'll get to see another slice of Vera action after the new series wrapped up on Sunday night, with gripping final tale The Darkest Evening attracted millions of viewers to ITV. There was a shocking moment in the episode when, as shots were heard, Vera fell to the ground with blood pouring from her head, before the show cut to an and break and viewers were left fearing the worst.

Thankfully, DCI Stanhope lived to solve another mystery and, of course Vera's iconic fishing hat made an appearance, having been a constant presence on screen since the drama made its debut back in 2011.

Vera's well documented mac and fishing hat fashion combo is a look that has been copied by fans young and old for occasions like World Book Day and in a promo for the new series of Vera launching on BritBox across the globe and to celebrate Brenda's 77th birthday,, a post has appeared on Twitter which reads: "Happy birthday, #BrendaBlethyn! #DidYouKnow Brenda buys some of Vera's clothes? Brenda even bought Vera's famous green bucket hat from a stall in a Newcastle market. As if we needed another reason to love her"

In an interview with ITV about Vera series 12, Brenda revealed that her hat gave her and the crew cause for concern, whilst filming the storm scenes for The Darkest Evening. The show's main star explained: "Some of the rain was artificial and then we had real rain when we didn’t want it. We also had wind machines and all the rest of it. We had to use pins to keep Vera’s hat on.

"Every ploy was used. I think a tube of glue would have come out if all else failed. The whole series would come to an end if I lost that hat!”
