A new video obtained by sources reveals a disturbing incident where a group of Venezuelan migrants allegedly attacked and robbed a 49-year-old man on a Chicago commuter train in February. The violent knifepoint attack left the victim unconscious but he later recovered. The suspects have been arrested and appeared in court, with three ordered to remain in custody and one released on electronic monitoring.
The video footage from inside a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train captures the suspects chatting with the victim before one of them puts him in a chokehold, leading to the robbery. The suspects were identified as Fernando Loyo-Rodriguez, Wilker Gutierrez Sierra, Carlos Carreno-Carreno, and Yonnier Guasamucare Garcia, aged between 18 and 22.
According to the police, the suspects stole $400 and a cellphone from the victim after threatening him with a knife. The incident occurred on the 2000 block of South Kostner Avenue while the train was passing through the area. The suspects were apprehended about 45 minutes later, with each providing a state-funded migrant shelter as their address.
The suspects have been charged with robbery, aggravated battery/strangulation, and attempted murder. During their court appearance, Carreno-Carreno, Loyo-Rodriguez, and Guasamucare Garcia were ordered to remain in custody, while Gutierrez Sierra was released on electronic monitoring.
It was revealed that three of the suspects had been arrested for shoplifting a month before the train attack. Immigration experts highlighted that if convicted on felony charges, three of the defendants could face deportation. The suspects had only been in the U.S. for a few months before the incident, with one having arrived just a month prior.
Chicago has seen an influx of migrants, with 35,000 individuals arriving between August 2022 and February 2024, many of whom have been relocated to shelters at the expense of taxpayers. The next hearing for the suspects is scheduled for August 28 for an update on the case.
