Authorities have revealed that a Venezuelan migrant, Bernardo Raul Castro Mata, is the alleged perpetrator behind a recent shooting incident in Queens, New York. The attack, described by Mayor Eric Adams as a senseless act of violence, unfolded as two NYPD officers narrowly escaped harm during a routine investigation.
The incident occurred when police encountered Castro Mata riding a moped in the wrong direction down a street. Upon attempting to stop him, the migrant fled on foot, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, Castro Mata reportedly opened fire, injuring one officer in the leg and another in a bulletproof vest.
Fortunately, both officers have since been discharged from the hospital, with one of them credited for applying a tourniquet to his wounded colleague. In self-defense, the officers returned fire, striking Castro Mata in the right ankle.
Castro Mata, who entered the country illegally last July, is also suspected of involvement in multiple robberies in the Queens area. The firearm used in the incident was found to be unregistered, mirroring the status of his moped.
Addressing the incident, Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Henry raised concerns about the criminal justice system's handling of such cases, emphasizing the need for reform to protect law enforcement officers and the public.
The ongoing investigation aims to determine Castro Mata's potential involvement in other criminal activities in the region. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in the line of duty.
