VCT 2027 Open Qualifiers begin in November with spots and cash on offer across 16 regions

2026 hasn’t yet drawn to a close but Riot Games has revealed the first details of the VCT 2027 Open Qualifier system, with non-partner teams getting a structured path into the top level of competitive VALORANT for the first time. The qualifiers begin in November, with four spots in each league's Kickoff tournament up for grabs for teams that earn their way through the open rounds.

How the league structure changes in 2027

The Americas, EMEA, and Pacific leagues will each field 12 teams in Kickoff: eight partnered organizations and four that have qualified through open play. It’s a big difference to the fully closed model we’ve become accustomed to since 2023.

China operates separately, running its own open qualifier under the same general framework.

Here’s how the 2027 season lines up:

Milestone Date
Free agency opens Nov. 2, 2026
Open qualifiers begin November 2026
VCT 2027 Kickoff January 2027
First Masters event February 2027

As is evident from the timeline, the qualifier window is in a bit of a tight spot alongside the open path to Champions that Riot has been building toward publicly for several months.

16 regions, one ecosystem

16 distinct regional competitions will feed into the three international leagues, broken down as follows:

VCT Territory Qualifier Regions
Americas North America, Latin America North, Latin America South, Brazil
EMEA Europe, Turkiye, MENA
Pacific South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Oceania
China China

The Southeast Asia qualifier covers Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and the rest of the subregion. Each competition has its own registration process, format, and eligibility rules, so teams will need to check the specific requirements for their region when registration opens.

What qualifying is actually worth

Riot will provide fixed payments to non-partner teams that reach specific competitive milestones. A Kickoff or cup qualification earns a team $100,000, while any team who makes it to a Masters event will net $200,000. Champions qualification pays out a bumper $400,000. A team that somehow smashes out all three in a single season? They could feasibly bag up to $1.1 million in direct support.

Riot has also earmarked more than $7 million in competitive rewards for the whole of the 2027 season. The end-of-year Game Changers Championship alone carries a $1 million prize pool. It's a level of financial backing that most tier-two esports organizations can usually only dream of.

Why this matters for the competitive scene

The VCT partner model was introduced before the 2023 season. It locked the top slots to a fixed set of franchised organizations, stabilized team finances but had the knock-on effect of shutting the door on organic promotion from the wider scene. The 2027 open qualifier structure reopens it, and the financial incentives Riot has attached mean teams can genuinely build toward it rather than treat it as an afterthought.

The qualifiers begin just as Champions Shanghai concludes, making November the natural handoff point from one VCT generation to the next. The 100 Thieves win in São Paulo and the Champions Shanghai group draw are both still fresh when registration for the 2027 pathway begins.

Turkish-language coverage from @esporincom also highlighted the eight-plus-four format for Kickoff, signaling that the announcement is landing across multiple regional communities simultaneously, not just in North America and Western Europe.

What teams need to do now

Registration hasn't opened yet. Because each regional qualifier will have distinct eligibility requirements that take time to satisfy, teams are advised to start preparing now. The free agency window opens Nov. 2, which effectively starts the roster-building clock alongside the qualifier preparation window.

VCT Kickoff is scheduled for January 2027, which gives open qualifier teams a tight runway to assemble rosters, clear regional eligibility requirements, and compete. More specific registration details for each of the 16 regions are expected closer to the November start date.
