Van 'fireball' at Edinburgh bypass as motor goes up in flames on road

A van has burst into flames on a major Scots road this morning.

Emergency services are believed to have rushed to the A720 on the Edinburgh Bypass shortly before 10am following reports of a vehicle on fire.

Dramatic photos taken at Sheriffhall Roundabout, which have been shared on social media, show thick, black plumes of smoke billowing from the van, which sits engulfed in ferocious, orange flames on the side of the road.

Traffic has been brought to a standstill on the A720 (Traffic Scotland)

The only part of the van still visible is the driver's compartment, with flames seen inside the cabin.

A row of queueing traffic can be seen on the other side of the barricade, while at least one officer can be seen up ahead, standing dangerously close to the burning wreck.

An ambulance can also be made out in the distance.

Traffic Scotland have confirmed that the road has been closed westbound at Sheriffhall due to the ongoing incident.

Transport bosses have also warned delays of at least 15 minutes for motorists travelling in the area.

Drivers have been advised, however, to find an alternative route to their destination while recovery of the vehicle takes place.

It is unclear whether anyone has been injured as a result of the event, or how the blaze started.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Motorists advised that the A720 Edinburgh Bypass is currently closed westbound at Sheriffhall, following a report of a vehicle fire.

"Please find an alternative route whilst recovery takes place."

Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for further comment.
