GET yourself wrapped up in HEADSCARF LIL (1.35) on Kelso’s ITV card.
The final of the Go North series, named after Mary Reveley’s grand old chaser Cab On Target, has thrown up a competitive contest. There looks to be loads of pace in the field with plenty of potential candidates willing to put their hand up for the frontrunner’s role.
That will suit Headscarf Lil perfectly. She stays further than this 2m5f distance and she loves to make her challenge from the rear off a strong gallop. Nicky Richards’ mare also loves decent ground so conditions will be ideal and she has been in good form this season.
She won over 2m4f at Carlisle and Newcastle before finding the slightly shorter distance against her at Doncaster in January. The race didn’t pan out for her hold-up style either so it was a good effort to finish fourth behind Jay Jay Reilly. Have 2pts each-way at 9-1.
Doncaster hosts the annual Flat season curtain raiser. The SBK Lincoln Handicap tends to be won by a four-year-old from a top yard with Group-race pretensions. There are several of those in the field but most are towards the top of the market.
Godolphin hope Modern News is my idea of the winner. He’ll be ridden by talented apprentice jockey Harry Davies and it could be a good day for the teenager. He partners NICK VEDDER (4.46) later in the day. This race should set up lovely for his come-from-behind style and, although he hasn’t been seen since August, he has run some good races when returning from a break.
Davies – attached to Andrew Balding’s stable – is going to be one of the stars of the summer and he’s likely to rapidly burn through his weight allowance. Nick Vedder might well help raise his profile even further. Have 1pt each-way at 16-1.
There’s a decent jumps card at Stratford where CANASTERO (2.18) should enjoy the return to a track he likes. He won over this course and distance when making his seasonal return in October. Things haven’t gone his way in two starts since but he’s been given a two-month break by trainer Philip and some of his best runs have come when fresh.
Have 1pt each-way at 9-1 with several bookies paying out on four places.
