Vital Kamerhe, ally of President Tshisekedi, sworn in as DR Congo parliament speaker

In DR Congo, a speaker of the National Assembly has finally been elected after months of political infighting. The winner, Vital Kamerhe, was subject to an assassination attempt in an attempted coup over the weekend. We take a closer look.

Annual coal consumption in Cameroon is estimated at 375,000 metric tons, with more than half of the production consumed in Douala and Yaoundé, the country's two largest cities. The growing demand for energy is threatening forests. Faced with this situation, a number of young Cameroonians have delved into the ecological charcoal-producing sector. Biochar, a new affordable and less polluting source of energy, is increasingly being used by households in the capital, Yaoundé.

Finally, in the run-up to the South African elections scheduled for May 29, there is much debate around the government's Affirmative Action policies and legislation. For 30 years, a series of measures have favoured South Africans who had been disadvantaged by apartheid – both in public employment and in business creation. But these measures are widely contested by the opposition.
