DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand education department had earlier claimed that they will start mobile schools for homeless and street kids but so far, only two such buses have become operational.
The department had decided to provide education to homeless children, child labourers and those who sell items at traffic signals, or beg for sustenance, through these schools. The first phase of the initiative had involved identifying these children using help from multiple agencies like the public works department, education and labour departments, among others. Following this, teachers were to be able to go to these clusters and take regular classes to ensure that the kids don’t slip through the cracks. The initiative was supposed to be fully operational this month, when schools reopen after summer break. However, so far, only two buses -- one in the Garhwal region and another in Kumaon -- have become operational, said the officials.
