DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand police on Wednesday issued an order mandating police verification for tenants from other states. According to the new order, a non-state resident would need to produce a verification (or character) certificate to rent a place in Uttarakhand. The person concerned should procure this certificate from the police station under whose jurisdiction his/her native place is situated, said the order.
In addition to the character certificate, non-state residents would also need to furnish an affidavit stating the authenticity of their documents. Police have said that the verification process for non-state residents has been made "more stringent to keep an eye on suspicious elements."
Ashok Kumar, state director general of police (DGP), said, "Police stations in Uttarakhand used to send the identity documents of tenants (received from landlords) to the thanas in their native state. However, we would rarely receive a response from police stations in other states. Therefore, in order to make the process more effective, we have now reversed the process. Now, tenants would be mandated to produce a verification (or character) certificate before taking a place for rent here. The documents of non-state residents will reach us through their landlords and employers."
The DGP added that the new law also applies to those who come to the hill state for menial jobs and live in slums. He added that those who fail to produce the documents will face police action .
