Uttar Pradesh govt mulls separate quota for 18 sub-castes within 27% OBC bracket

LUCKNOW: The Yogi Adityanath government is mulling to provide separate reservation within the 27% OBC quota bracket to the 18 OBC sub-castes whose proposed inclusion in the Scheduled Castes list through a series of government orders issued between 2016 and 2019 has been struck down by the Allahabad high court on the grounds of being unconstitutional.

A senior UP minister told TOI that the state government is considering creation of a separate quota for the said backward sub-castes within the OBC bracket of 27% reservation itself. Though the final contours of the proposal are yet to be decided, sources said that the proposal will have to be taken up in the state cabinet besides getting it passed in both houses of UP assembly as a bill before sending it to the Centre for its final approval.
