LUCKNOW: At least 13 people were killed after drowning in a well late on Wednesday evening during a ‘haldi’ ceremony in Kushinagar. The incident took place when they were standing by the railing around the well and the iron mesh gave way.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of more bodies being fished out from the well. The rescue operations were underway till past midnight. The incident took place at Nebua Naurangiya police limits in Kushinagar.

PM Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath express condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday expressed their condolences to the family of those who lost their lives after accidentally falling into a well during a wedding function in Kushinagar.
"The accident in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh is heart-wrenching. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this. With this, I wish the injured people a speedy recovery. The local administration is involved in all possible help," tweeted PM on Thursday.
"The death of the villagers in an unfortunate incident of village Naurangiya School Tola of Kushinagar district is very sad. My condolences are with the bereaved families of the deceased. Prabhu Shri Ram is wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured," tweeted Yogi on Thursday.
President Ram Nath Kovind also extended condolences to the family of those who lost their lives after accidentally falling into a well during a wedding function in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar.
"Saddened to hear the sad news of the death of many people including women and children in the accident in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. My deepest condolences to all the bereaved families who lost their families in this tragic accident. I wish the injured a speedy recovery," Rashtrapati Bhavan tweeted.
