Utah’s Great Salt Lake may not be so salty after all as a recent study appears to have detected a large freshwater reservoir underneath.
Located in northwestern Utah, the Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth largest in the world, according to Utah’s Department of Natural Resources. In November 2022, the average daily lake level hit a new record low, dropping to 4,188.5 feet above sea level, the department said.
