CHANDIGARH: Arguing that Le Corbusier’s composition can’t be altered under the Chandigarh Master Plan 2031 and the dossier submitted with Unesco for heritage site status, the UT administration has declined to give Haryana 10 acres out of Capitol Complex for either a new assembly house or extending the old building.
The Unesco heritage area tag makes the complex transnational property, so the UT administration claims that no heavy construction can be allowed there. Citing the state’s delimitation scheduled in 2026, which will increase the assembly seats from 90 to between 115 and 126, Haryana had asked Union home minister Amit Shah to spare land for the new assembly house. It claimed that the current building didn’t have room for even a single extra seat.
