Usher Shows How Ochre Reinvents Yellow: The Rug That Brings Warmth And Sophistication Without Feeling Too Bright Or Traditional

Usher.

Yellow isn't for everyone, but we are convinced that deep, handsome ochre is. The golden, earthy take on a sunny shade, ochre has been making waves in retro design for years, and is now making its way back into contemporary homes.

Case in point? Usher's entryway, which features a plush, ochre rug, adds just the right pop of color to the otherwise neutral space.

Its sophisticated hue and place within the earth tone family make it incredibly versatile, and a fantastic entry point into the yellow side of the color wheel.

According to design experts, earth tones in general are a fantastic color choice in 2026, as they bring in a soothing, elevated energy to any space.

'As we embrace the season ahead, there’s a growing desire to create interiors that feel grounded, restorative, and deeply connected to nature,' Magdalena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at Barker & Stonehouse, explains.

'Earthy tones, think warm terracottas, soft clays, rich ochres, and muted greens, set the perfect foundation for a dining room that’s both calming and welcoming. To achieve this look, incorporate natural materials such as wood, stone, and ceramic, which not only add texture and depth but also bring a tactile, organic quality to the space. Furniture in oak or walnut instantly warms a room, while stone accessories or earthenware tableware can introduce subtle, sculptural accents.'

She continues, 'Layering textiles in natural fibres, linen table runners, cotton cushions, or wool throws, enhances the cosy, lived-in feel. Complementary lighting, such as warm-toned pendants or candlelight, further softens the mood, creating a setting that feels intimate and functional in equal measure. The result is a dining room that balances beauty with practicality, inviting you to slow down and enjoy moments of togetherness in a space that feels timeless and serene.'

To bring a pop of ochre into your entryway, we love this Murano glass candlestick holder from Net-A-Porter, and this runner from Iris Apfel's Ruggable collection is delightful. They bring the pop of sunshine you need in the depths of winter, but we promise they'll look just as delightful as we look towards the spring.
