US tycoon behind failed Everton takeover bid to 'continue' Atletico Madrid talks

Maciek Kaminski, the US real estate tycoon who had held takeover talks with Everton during the summer, continues to have his eye on investing in Atletico Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Kaminski, along with oil magnate John Thornton and former Manchester United and Chelsea CEO Peter Kenyon, had entered into an exclusivity period with Everton earlier this year following talks with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri over the possible purchase of a controlling stake. The talks had initially centred around investment into the stadium project.

The talks ended with no agreement and Moshiri then penned an open letter to Everton fans pledging his commitment to taking the club forward as majority shareholder, although open to the possibility of investment.

Sources have told the ECHO that Kaminski remains interested in potential investment into Everton through his Las Vegas-based investment vehicle KAM Sports LLC, although a full takeover bid appears to now be highly unlikely.

Kaminski has moved on to other targets, acquiring Greek Super League side Panetolikos earlier this month while he has been linked with potential investment into La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish media outlet Vozpopuli.

The Minnesota-based property tycoon was pictured heading into the Wanda Metropolitano for what Vozpopuli described as a meeting with Atletico CEO and majority shareholder Miguel Angel Gil Marin. Rival Spanish outlet Marca followed up the initial story by pouring cold water on any rumours of a takeover deal being discussed. Sources close to the Kaminski family told the ECHO that any reported interest in the Colchoneros is "purely speculative".

But Vozpopuli claim that the meeting was "satisfactory" with sources telling the media outlet that talks will continue in early 2023, claiming that the Kaminski camp was unhappy that the meeting had been leaked. A valuation of €750m (£663m) has been mooted by the same publication.

Links exist between Kaminski and Gil Marin through Kenyon, the man who had been the front for the takeover interest in Everton back in June. Kenyon has a long-standing business relationship with the Atletico Madrid majority shareholder and CEO and had been employed as an advisor to the club between 2014 and 2015. Kenyon, whose remit was to expand Atletico's global brand and presence, was seen as a success during his time as an advisor at the club having aided their pursuit of greater commercial revenues during his stint in the Spanish capital.
