US TV presenter asks why Katie Taylor got into competitive boxing ahead of match against Amanda Serrano

Fight week has finally arrived for Katie Taylor as she prepares to finally throw down with another giant of women's boxing in Amanda Serrano.

But that doesn't mean she gets to completely cut back on her promotional duties as she appeared alongside her opponent on NBC's Today Show.

And while chatting away on the popular daytime TV staple, she had to field one or two unusual questions from the hosts since they didn't exactly appear to be boxing aficionados.

At one point, Taylor was asked 'Forgive the ignorance here but how does one get into competitive boxing? Like, growing up were you just like 'I wanna punch people - I wanna beat people up.'

The 2012 Olympic champion is by now a veteran to promotional interviews across various platforms like this one though so she is as able to take unorthodox questions in stride just as well as she is awkward southpaws in the ring.

Laughing it off, she replied: "I think for me it was just in the family so it was just part of my family growing up. It's in the blood I guess.

"My dad was a boxer and my two brothers boxed as well. My mother was actually the first female boxing judge in Ireland as well.

"So I feel like I'm carrying on her pioneer spirit. Boxing was just part of my household growing up and the minute I walked into a gym as a nine or ten-year-old it just took hold of my heart.

"It became my passion instantly and I just loved the sport and everything about it."

Elsewhere in the interview the Bray native explained that she feels a victory in this super-fight will outstrip any of her other previous career accomplishments - whether that be in the amateurs or the pros.

It's not hard to see why as this is the biggest stage a women's boxing match has ever had as they are the first women to headline an event at the spiritual home of the sport in Madison Square Garden.

Serrano is certainly a worthy adversary for such a spotlight moment as the Puerto Rican has won world titles across seven weights.

In another media event earlier in the week, Taylor summed up the magnitude of the bout.

She noted: "This is just a special occasion for me, to headline a huge fight like this at Madison Square Garden. It’s being billed as the biggest fight in female boxing history. This is just incredible and a real privilege for me.

“I love being involved in these kinds of fights. These are the challenges that I’ve always wanted. I don’t think I’ve ever backed down from any challenge. I’ve wanted to face the very best.

“Amanda Serrano is a fantastic fighter, she’s a great champion and she’s not here for no reason. She deserves this opportunity as well. She’s been pioneering her own way and that’s why this fight is the best in female boxing history. We have champion versus champion. The best versus the best and this is why this fight is so special.

“This fight is at Madison Square Garden, the most iconic venue in boxing. The Mecca of boxing, really. You think of Madison Square Garden, and you think the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier these kinds of fights.

“It’s definitely a 50-50 fight. I think that a lot of people will have me, and a lot of people will have her before the fight. I love being involved in these kinds of fights.

“This fight is genuinely the biggest fight in boxing as a whole right now!"
