We are living in truly strange times. After all, the government’s reaction to a viral outbreak was to appoint a lead doctor whose primary expertise is in urology, specifically, penile implants. Dr. Brian Christine, a four-star admiral, has stepped into the role of assistant HHS secretary and the top official responsible for infectious disease policy within the Trump administration. As such, he is steering the government’s response to the hantavirus outbreak of MV Hondius.
Per The Independent, before this high-level government position, Christine was a urologist in Alabama. He was also known for a YouTube show called Erection Connection, where he discussed erectile dysfunction. It’s certainly a unique background for someone now tasked with managing infectious disease policy on a national level.
With regards to the outbreak, he claimed the administration’s response would be “grounded in science” and transparency. However, his past actions and public statements make that promise a bit difficult to digest. A review of his media appearances and social media posts reveals a history of amplifying right-wing conspiracy theories and accusing public health officials of targeting conservatives.
Basically, he hasn’t really embraced science before
Christine has previously claimed that the COVID pandemic was part of a government plot designed to control the population. He has even compared the Biden administration to Nazi-controlled Germany.
During a 2022 podcast interview, he stated, “There aren’t concentration camps in the United States, but there’s no question that conservatives feel threatened. There’s no questions that conservatives like myself and others feel like the government is being weaponized against us.”
His skepticism toward public health isn’t limited to these comments. Dr. Christine has frequently derided COVID mandates and claimed that vaccines did not stop the transmission of the disease.
It’s worth noting that, according to Johns Hopkins University, while the data is still being dissected, it is likely that vaccines do reduce the risk of transmission in some people. Beyond his views on the pandemic, he has cast doubt on the 2020 election results and has pushed for a ban on abortion without exceptions for rape or incest.

When asked about these concerns, HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon provided the following statement: “Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Christine remains focused on executing President Trump and Secretary Kennedy’s agenda to Make America Healthy Again and deliver on President Trump’s Executive Order to protect our children against chemical and surgical mutilation,” Nixon said.
Now, sure, this level of conspiracy and lack of public health experience is concerning, especially given his role. Thankfully, though, hantavirus, by itself, doesn’t pose the same threat of a global pandemic as other viruses.

According to the BBC, unlike highly contagious diseases, like the Norovirus now plaguing another cruise, or measles and even influenza, the Andes strain of hantavirus identified on the Hondius is not easily spread. It typically originates from rodents, and humans generally catch it by breathing in air contaminated with virus particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva.
Human-to-human transmission is only possible through very close contact. So, the risk to the general public remains extremely low. It is not spread through everyday social interactions like walking in public spaces or going to school. That being said, it is still very dangerous to anyone who actually gets infected
He once hosted an “Erection Connection” video series on YouTube and spread conspiracies about the Covid-19 vaccine during the Biden administration. He is now one of the Trump administration’s top officials in charge of infectious disease policy.

Passengers from the affected cruise ship, the MV Hondius, have been evacuated and are being monitored, but experts have stressed that this is not the start of a pandemic. The World Health Organisation has noted that the risk of infection globally remains low. Especially now that they have potentially identified Patient Zero.
Even so, it does make you wonder why the oversight of such a situation is placed in the hands of someone whose expertise is so far removed from the field of infectious disease, regardless of how manageable the virus might be. Then again, why was he the pick for the role itself?

When we face public health challenges, what everyone hopes for is someone with the relevant expertise at the helm. So, I really don’t know why that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
