US house speaker Nancy Pelosi said America will not abandon Taiwan as she met with the island’s president during her visit which has heightened tensions with China.

“Today the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy,” she said in a short speech during a meeting with Tsai Ing-wen, as she became the highest-ranking American official to visit the island in 25 years.
