The US figure skating team won't be receiving medals of any colour at the 2022 Winter Olympics despite making an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [Cas].
The squad of Evan Bates, Karen Chen, Nathan Chen, Madison Chock, Zachary Donohue, Brandon Frazier, Madison Hubbell, Alexa Knierim and Vincent Zhou, finished second in the team event on 65 points.
That put them just two clear of third-placed Japan, with Canada fourth on 53.
However, it was the Russian Olympic Committee deemed comfortable gold medal winners with 74 points, inspired by a virtuoso display from Kamila Valieva.
It was then announced the 15-year-old had tested positive for a banned substance though, and the medal ceremony - scheduled for February 8 - was duly cancelled.
Valieva's fate, and the official result of the team event, is now the subject of an investigation into her positive test, meaning it could be a considerable time before the final positions are confirmed.
Dissatisfied with being denied a ceremony, and at being presented with teddy bears of the mascot Bing Dwen Dwen in the immediate post-event presentation, the US appealed to Cas to receive their silver medals before leaving Beijing.
The Games officially finish on Sunday.
However, on Saturday the authority confirmed it had thrown out the appeal, adding it would release the reason for its decision in the coming days.
The International Olympic Committee, who previously stated that no ceremony can take place whilst an investigation is taking place, said it would not comment on an ongoing procedure.
Should Valieva's team be disqualified, then the US would be expected to belatedly receive gold medals, with Japan upgrading to silver and Canada taking bronze.
It was announced on 8 February that Valieva had tested positive on December 25 for angina drug Trimetazidine, which is on the banned list as it improves physical efficiency and endurance.
After initially being suspended, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency [RUSADA] lifted her ban, seemingly freeing her up to participate in the individual event.
The World Anti-Doping Agency then appealed that decision, but Cas ruled in favour of the skater, citing the "exceptional circumstances" of her being a minor.
It proved a harrowing experience for Valieva though, who left the ice in tears after an error-strewn display in the free skate saw her drop down from the lead position to finish fourth.
