US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has highlighted the progress being made towards the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 in Lebanon. While acknowledging the advancements, Blinken emphasized that there is still work to be done to bring an end to the conflict in the region.
Blinken stated that efforts are underway to establish a clear understanding of the requirements for the effective implementation of Resolution 1701, which would serve as the foundation for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. Key elements include the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces from the border, the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, defining their authorities, and establishing an enforcement mechanism.
During his recent trip to the region, Blinken noted that progress is being made in reaching these understandings. He underscored the importance of clarity from both Lebanon and Israel on the necessary steps outlined in Resolution 1701 to achieve effective implementation and pave the way for a diplomatic resolution and potential ceasefire.
Last week, Blinken engaged in discussions with top Israeli officials and Lebanon's caretaker prime minister as part of the ongoing diplomatic efforts. Additionally, White House official Amos Hochstein held talks in Israel on Thursday to further address the situation in Lebanon.
